8 Things That Could Have Improved 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law'

Updated: Jan 21

What went wrong with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and what could have fixed it?

Spoilers: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

As you may know, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has not received the most positive response from viewers, so we decided to put together a list of things that we believe could help improve the show.

1) Better CGI & Character Design

When the first trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law dropped, audiences immediately noticed how awful the CGI looked and took to social media to voice their concerns. Some complained she looked like DreamWorks' Shrek and noticed how the CGI design for Smart Hulk looks notably fine while the design for She-Hulk looked unfinished. This CGI was improved once the show was released but something continues to look off. The reason for this may be that VFX workers are being overworked and are expected to work with unrealistic deadlines.

Another complaint was how small and different She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) looks compared to the Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) design looks more accurate to the comics. Making him look like a ginormous steroid-ridden green monster, while the She-Hulk design on the show simply looks like a very tall human who happens to be green. She lacks muscle and the definitive physical properties that make her She-Hulk.

2) A Better-Written Main Character

Tatiana Maslany as an actress has a lot going for her in this series, but her character continues to be unbearable at times. In the first episode of She-Hulk, Jen makes a long-winded speech about how she's had a harder life and is better at managing her anger than Bruce. This is a direct insult to Bruce Banner because he’s arguably one the most suffered characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the overall Marvel Comics. Additionally, her speech is ironic as she loses control of her anger multiple times throughout the show.

However, as I said earlier, Tatiana Maslany is likeable and her performance is great. Marvel should have written a better script for her character and made her more likable. The way she's written makes it hard for the audience to feel any sympathy towards her. Instead, she comes off as reckless, selfish, unsympathetic, arrogant, and egotistical.

3) A Better Storyline And Script

The main problem with this show is the writing. The show is constantly all over the place and there is no firm storyline. It feels as though everything is unfocused. Even Jennifer Walters says herself in episode nine that,

"None of these storylines make any sense."

It seems like the show is more about Jennifer Walter’s personal problems than anything else. The show takes a “slice of life” approach, forgetting the necessary superhero aspect of the story. Jennifer Walters does nothing heroic in this show and when we finally get introduced to some conflict, it is underwhelming and poorly written. The overall story is completely vacant.

4) A Main Antagonist

Who the villain is in She-Hulk is still unclear. Before the show was released, viewers thought Abomination (Tim Roth) would be the main antagonist in the show. However, at the end of the first episode of She-Hulk, we are introduced to Titania (Jameela Jamil), a character who would often go toe-to-toe against She-Hulk in the comics. Most viewers then thought either she or the Abomination would be the main antagonist in the show, but they would be mistaken. Both character end up being used as props with neither of them contributing much at all to the plot. It turns out that Todd Phelps is the antagonist/villain in the show which makes zero sense and is the show's lazy writing at its finest.

Titania as the main antagonist of the show would have been perfect. In the comics Titania receives her superpowers from one of the most powerful Marvel villains, Doctor Doom, in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #3. But the show doesn't explain who or what she is and that is a big mistake on Marvel's part. Marvel could have had the chance to introduce a new underrated character and make her popular but they fumbled the bag on this one, instead, making her character another joke.

5) Handling The Abomination Better

A large selling point for this show was claiming that Tim Roth would be returning to play the Abomination and making the viewers think he was going to serve an important role. Fans anticipated that there was going to be a rematch between him and the Hulk— but that did not happen. In The Incredible Hulk (2008), he was portrayed as threatening and fearsome. However, in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law he is dulled down to a reformed motivational speaker. It's disappointing how Marvel wasted such a ruthless and intimidating character with so much potential.

6) The Classic She-Hulk Origin

In the first episode, Jennifer Walters gains her powers when she comes in contact with her cousin Bruce’s blood after a car crash. However, in the comics, Jennifer Walters acquired her powers after she received a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce. Having these comic book origins in the show would have been better & more interesting, with larger implications and plotlines to stand on.

7) Bigger And Better Action

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law lacked action— and when there was action, it wasn't the best. In episode three, She-Hulk runs into a group who called themselves “The Wrecking Crew”. The anticipation and tension in the scene is done well, but the actual "fight" is done leaving the audience wanting more. Another example is when She-Hulk goes up against Titania in episode six. Once again, the build-up was nice, but the actual fight was underwhelming. And the most disappointing battle was in the finale when the plot had reached its climax in an action-packed fight scene between the Abomination, Smart Hulk, Titania, Hulk King, and, Jen. The audience was expecting a huge awesome brawl between everyone but once again, viewers were left disappointed.

8) Better Courtroom Scenes

One of the largest parts of She-Hulk's character is the fact that she is a lawyer, and a good lawyer at that. The show does an excellent job incorporating the lawyer aspect of the character, but it fails to make a good courtroom scene. Yes, this show is a comedy, but I couldn’t help but compare the She-Hulk courtroom scenes to the courtroom scenes on Netflix's Daredevil. The fact that this show is a comedy is not an excuse for bad courtroom scenes. Movies like My Cousin Vinny and Legally Blonde both fall under the comedy genre, and they have great courtroom scenes. So what’s She-Hulk’s excuse?

Although this show has multiple issues, it's not the worst show ever to exist. All it needed was a little more thought & care. What are your thoughts on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law? And what changes would you have made to the show?
